New site and a new "Office"

November 7, 2009 | Rick Nashleanas

We recently released Anderson Family Dental’s new web site. (You can read much more about this here.) The most interesting aspect of this implementation is that we converted the entire staff to the Google app platform.

All Andersonsmile.com email is hosted on the Google servers. Google is pretty good at operating servers.

Rather than Microsoft Outlook, the staff enjoys the ability to check their gmail from any machine, even at home. The interface is easy to use. Training the staff was not only easy, they actually had a good time. (At one point, someone asked me if I had worked for Google!)

We had already set up an iGoogle home page for each staff member, which included Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and more. The staff members in the training sessions enjoyed customizing their themes and gadgets.

Google Docs was an unexpected hit. Everyone wanted an easier way to share “Word” documents, “Excel” spreadsheets, etc.

We had some explanation to do so everyone could get their head around Google Calendar, primarily due to just a different interface. Then, some went hook, line and sinker for the Gmail contacts; the office decided to only add vendors and important contacts there, not all patients.

The doctors use the mobile phone integration of the entire suite. When I talked about Google Voice, everyone who had sky-high text bills was excited about using Google Voice’s SMS capabilities.

Personally, I love Google chat. Although we have the entire office as friends in Google chat, it was completely a strike out. They didn’t see a compelling reason to use chat. We’ll see if that changes when they spend more and more time logged in to iGoogle.

So, Anderson Family Dental not only has a great new web site that they control, but they have drunk the Google Kool Aid!
