Why was our website down?

Like many big web development projects, there is a death march at the end. (Of course, when is a social networking site ever “done”?)

So, when there’s no time to even sleep, what happens?

  • The shared host that we have used for some time turned off our web site, www.monarchdigital.com, because we were eating up too much CPU. (Really, this is a little brochure site with nothing to it. Write me and I’ll tell you what shared host not to use!)
  • Our fax machine stopped working.

Working offline with Google

We have drunk the Google Kool Aid. Instead of hosting email, we point at a Google business account for Monarch and our customers. We use Google docs, Google Voice, and so forth. The biggest problem our customers have had in moving away from Microsoft Outlook and Office has been using their mail and applications off line. I’ve always suggested using Google Gears, which synchronizes your email and documents on your laptop, not only giving you offline access, but a local backup.

New site and a new "Office"
